Tamila is the daughter of Maria N’hama, who is a housekeeper, and Augusto Mamanta, who is a student. Both belong to the Balanta ethnic group. Augusto is ill, suffering from schizophrenia, and since his breakdown, he has never been the same. He is entirely dependent on family support, even though he often feels better and goes to the local market to earn some money to help with his own support. Tamila lives with her parents and a cousin who takes care of her and her sister, making a total of 5 people.
