Her Story
Esperança
12 years old
2nd Grade
Date of Birth: 03/10/2014
Esperança is the daughter of Joaninha Cá, a street vendor, and Jorge Fernandes, who works as a maritime police officer. However, as a public servant, her father often spends months without receiving his salary, which puts significant strain on the family’s financial situation.
According to her mother, Esperança was diagnosed with epilepsy at six months old. She takes monthly medication to prevent seizures, but these are very costly, and the family relies on the support of friends and relatives to cover them.
Esperança also has a disability affecting one of her legs and arms, which limits her mobility. Physical therapy is essential to improve her motor coordination and quality of life. Despite frequent school attendance, she was unable to stay enrolled last year because her family couldn’t afford the tuition fees. Her dream is to access education and build friendships like other children her age.
